On June 6, 1944, at dawn, the first landing craft opened on Omaha Beach. The men who emerged faced hell. German machine guns mowed them down from the cliffs. The water was red. Bodies piled up on the sand. And yet, they advanced.

These men wore a red, number 1-shaped insignia on their shoulders. The Big Red One. The 1st Infantry Division of the US Army — the oldest, most decorated, most battle-hardened of American divisions. Engaged in North Africa, Sicily, then Normandy, it was already a legend before setting foot on Omaha. That day, facing the most formidable defenses of the Atlantic Wall, it paid the heaviest price. And it held its ground.
