He's back.

Even before taking off, they gave them a name. A face. A soul. On the noses of B-17 bombers, P-51 fighters, and C-47s that would drop men into the Norman night, anonymous painters — often just ordinary soldiers — armed themselves with brushes and a few pots of paint to transform a war machine into a work of art.

This was Nose Art. Born in the dusty hangars of Allied bases, forbidden by regulation, tolerated by commanders, adored by crews. A way to ward off fear. To assert one's existence in the face of death. To carry with them, high in the sky, a bit of humanity, humor, and life. Pin-ups, fierce animals, cartoon characters, catchy slogans — each plane had its character, just as each man had his own.

On the night of June 5-6, 1944, these decorated planes flew over Normandy. Some parachuted the men of the 101st Airborne onto Sainte-Mère-Église. Others bombed German coastal batteries before dawn. Their names painted on the fuselage — their faces drawn by hands trembling with emotion or cold — went down in history without us always knowing who had traced them.

Mr Sparkle is this tribute.
