MATTU HOODED WORKER JACKETS

"Worker jackets," or work jackets, originated in the late 19th century, during the Industrial Revolution. Designed to meet the needs of laborers, these jackets were originally utilitarian garments, prioritizing functionality and durability. They were meant to protect workers from harsh conditions while offering great freedom of movement. Made from thick cotton, often canvas or denim, they were characterized by their robustness, multiple pockets, and simple design.

The most iconic work jacket is undoubtedly the "chore jacket," adopted by American and European workers. With its three or four patch pockets and often contrasting collar, it quickly became a standard in the working class. In France, the "bleu de travail" jacket, an emblematic garment for laborers, falls into the same tradition. Made of moleskin or velvet, it was worn by artisans, farmers, and factory workers.

Over time, worker jackets left the workshops to enter the world of fashion. In the 1960s and 1970s, they were adopted by counter-cultural movements, who appreciated their raw and functional side. Workwear style then became a symbol of authenticity and rebellion against established clothing norms.

Today, worker jackets are being reinterpreted by major fashion brands. They are offered in lighter fabrics, modernized cuts, and various colors, while retaining their utilitarian essence.
