On June 6, 1944, there were 177 of them. One hundred and seventy-seven Frenchmen on the beaches of Normandy — the only French soldiers to land that day, among hundreds of thousands of Allies. They formed the 1st Marine Riflemen Commando Battalion. At their head, one man: Commander Philippe Kieffer.

Kieffer is not a fictional hero. He is an ordinary man made extraordinary by the strength of his will. Born in Haiti, a banker by trade, he joined Free France in London after the debacle of 1940. He was 40 years old — too old to be a commando, some said. He didn't care. He single-handedly created the French marine riflemen unit integrated into Lord Lovat's British commandos. He trained them. He forged them into a cohesive unit. He led them to Sword Beach.

On that morning of June 6, wounded twice — once on the beach, a second time a few hours later — he refused to be evacuated. He continued to advance with his men. Caen. Ouistreham. The casino. Objectives taken. Mission accomplished.

These 177 Frenchmen were the first French soldiers to set foot on their own country's soil in four years. They wept and they fired. They advanced.
